BMW 3 Series Problems Used Car

Where to look for a dirty trick when buying a used Bavarian: disadvantages of BMW 3 series with a run
BMW 3 Series A compact car manufactured by a German automaker BMW AG. BMW "treshka" has always been one of the most popular cars among young motorists. The predilection for this machine is quite understandable, since it is pleasant in all respects: actual appearance, good equipment, powerful power units, high level of comfort and excellent handling. Adds popularity to this model and an acceptable price for a car on the secondary market. And, here's how things stand with the reliability of used BMW 3 Series, and what should I look for when choosing a "treshka" with mileage, I'll tell in this article.

Some interesting facts:
The presentation of the first BMW 3 series, which had an E-21 index, took place in June 1975, and marked the beginning of the history of BMW's "treshkas". In 1980, a sports version of the car was introduced, which was named "BMW M3". In its essence, this BMW 3 series in the body of the "coupe", but modified by the factory tuning department of BMW and is equipped with only the most powerful engine. To date, six generations of this car have already been replaced, but today we are talking about the fifth generation of the model, the world premiere, which took place at the Geneva Motor Show in 2005. Depending on the type of body the car is assigned the appropriate index: sedan - E90, station wagon - E91, coupe - E92, convertible - E93. When developing the design of the fifth generation of treshki, the manufacturer did not dare to radically change the style, but limited evolutionary changes, bringing the exterior of the tresh to the design of older models.
Half a year after the debut of the sedan, the BMW 3-series in the body of the station wagon appeared in the market, and in September 2006 the serial production of the car in the body of the coupe began. Since 2007 on all BMW 3 series have started to apply the system "Dainemix", Which demonstrated how the pleasure behind the wheel can be harmonized with exemplarily low rates of fuel consumption and toxic emissions. BMW 3 Series is the most sold model of the company - in 2008 about 40% of sales of BMW AG fell on the third series. Models of this series periodically fall into the list of the best selling cars in Europe. In total, 2,147,247 copies were produced during the production of this model.

BMW 3 Series
The body of BMW 3 Series corresponds to the brand image and is not subject to corrosion. The metal of the body elements persistently withstands our reagents, and, even in the chips, after several years of operation, in most cases, there is not even a hint of rust. But, body equipment can not boast exemplary reliability. For example, after 2 years of operation, the front optics begin to melt. Over time, the door handles are jammed, this ailment is unpleasant because when it appears, you have to change not only the handle, but also the door lock. Another trouble that is characteristic of machines in their age is the collapse of the seal between the rear window and the trunk lid. In most cases, the owners eliminate the problem on their own, putting the elastic on the glue. For the winter it is necessary to fill in a quality non-frost-proof glass, otherwise, in severe frost, when trying to wash the headlights, the washers will fail.EnginesTraditionally for BMW, the "treshka" has a large number of available powertrains, but in our secondary market there are often cars with such power units: petrol - 2.0 (136, 150, 168 hp), 2.5 (215 hp .), 3.0 (254, 268 hp), 3.5 (302 hp). Also, quite common are diesel engines - 2.0 (120, 141, 167, 177 hp), 3.0 (194, 201, 228, 242 hp). Power units BMW were always associated with power and reliability, but with the engines "treshki" is not so unambiguous. One of the most problematic places of engines is an increased oil consumption - up to 2 liters per 10,000 km of run, and, the more the car runs, the more it is necessary to add oil (up to a liter of 1000 km). When servicing engines, it is necessary to fill in the recommended oil, otherwise the oil caps are prematurely worn. In the 2.0-liter power pack, the valve cover is made of plastic, because of this, oil leaks out from under it. Also, this motor does not like overheating, and if you do not follow the temperature of the engine, in most cases the valve cover loses its geometry. Once in 60-80 thousand km, the sensor of the eccentric shaft must be changed. It is worth noting that if the car fails, it will not start. Once per 100,000 km, a throttle valve replacement is required (Valvetronic) - the electric motor is coked with oil. The rest of the gasoline engines are more reliable, but nevertheless, it is difficult to call them problem-free. One of the most common ailments of gasoline engines is a small resource of a catalyst, which, even if refueled with high-quality fuel, is unlikely to last more than 70,000 km. Quite often the reason for visiting the service center is fuel injectors, which in our reality average only 80-100 thousand km. The first signal about the presence of problems with the injectors will be: bad acceleration dynamics, as well as blue smoke from the exhaust system. Chain Timing on average serves 150,000 km, if in time not to notice that the chain began to stretch, everything can end very sadly (chain jumps and piston bending valve). In time, the bolt of the chain tensioner is loosened from the vibrations, as a result of oil seepage from under it. To the run of 100 thousand km the solenoid of control of the clutches of the variable phases of the gas distribution is clogged with oil sediments. This immediately affects the dynamics, and it happens that the motor goes into emergency mode of operation.

BMW 3 Series
Diesel enginesNo better situation with diesel engines. The most problematic is the engine 2.0 (177 hp), which, even with a small mileage, can break the chain from the drive camshafts. If this trouble happens with the engine, you need to be ready to shell out $ 800-900. for restoration works (cost taking into account original spare parts). The problem was solved after 2008. Also, the disadvantages of this power unit can be attributed and piezoelectric fuel injectors (average resource 50-70 thousand km), which can not be restored.
The two-liter engine capacity of 163 hp is equipped with a turbine from the company Mitsubishi, as a rule, its resource does not exceed 100-120 thousand km (the axis collapses). Also, there may be problems with the turbine control unit (changes in assembly with the turbine). The remaining engines are more reliable, but suffer from leakage of oil from under the exhaust manifold, which leads to damage to the intake dampers, and subsequently the engine. When using poor-quality fuel, it is premature (on the run of 50-80 thousand km) the elements of the fuel system fail (injectors, fuel pump), as well as the EGR valve and particulate filter.TransmissionBMW 3 Series can be equipped with such gearboxes - six-speed mechanics and automatic transmission. If we talk about the reliability of the transmission, then with careful operation and timely maintenance, both boxes practically do not deliver any problems. In rare cases, there may be trouble with the automatic transmission due to a malfunction in the control unit (clutch hanging). For the sake of justice, it is worth noting that the problem is not serious and is solved by the diagnosis and removal of the error. In mechanics, the weak point is considered to be the grip. At average loads, its lifetime is about 100,000 km, but if you use the car as a sports car, clutch replacement may be required after 30,000 km. Most BMW 3-series rear-wheel drive, but, in the secondary market there are also all-wheel drive versions. The most common problem of such cars is a small resource of the transfer box, which breaks down once in 80-100 thousand km of run. In most cases, for the further use of the all-wheel drive, the distribution has to be changed to a new one. The 3-series HF BMW combines comfortable comfort and a high level of handling. Most of the front suspension parts are made of aluminum, this solution significantly reduces the weight of the car, but negatively affects the cost of repair running. If we talk about its reliability, then in this component the suspension of the "treshka" will not disappoint. Many owners complain that after 50,000 km of run, when driving on a bad road surface, a strange noise appears from the suspension (creak). This feature is not a breakdown and is eliminated by the lubrication of silent blocks. Otherwise, if you do not take into account the pillars and bushings of the stabilizer (change every 30-40 thousand km), in the front axle, with careful operation, up to 100-150 thousand km do not have to do anything. The rear suspension is also reliable. An exception can only become floating silentblocks, which are very often on a run of 80000. km are out of order. The rear tire is characterized by an increased wear of the tread from the inside. This is due to the fact that the wheels for increased stability are installed in the house. In the helmsman, most often the troubles are delivered by the GUR pump (it is necessary to change once in 50-70 thousand in km) and the steering rack (begins to knock on the run 60-80 thousand km, the replacement will cost $ 500). SalonTraditionally, for most BMW models, there are no complaints about the trash compartment, and this applies both to the quality of the finishing materials and to the assembly. With regard to the reliability of the electrical equipment of the passenger compartment, here one should pay attention to the efficiency of the fan of the stove (eventually starts to whistle). The problem is solved quite simply (lubrication of engine parts is necessary), but to get to the fan you have to disassemble the floor of the cabin. Also, there are complaints about the radio (stops catching radio stations). The central castle (stops responding to the remote control). To eliminate the problem you will have to shell out about 200 cu. (requires replacing the antenna in the boot lid or wiring, the problem is relevant for the station wagon). If, on the instrument panel, the indicator with the yellow steering wheel is lit, it is necessary to immediately call the service. If this is not done, at the most inopportune moment the steering wheel can jam. In most cases, the ailment is treated with a flashing of the control unit, but it is not uncommon for the owners to shell out the replacement of the electronic board.

BMW 3 Series
BMW 3 Series in the second-hand condition has a number of rather serious drawbacks with power units, for the elimination of which, in most cases, have to lay out a round bag. However, if you are looking for a stylish and fast car, the management of which gives a true pleasure, then you will not find a more suitable option in this price segment.
Pluses:
