Kia Magentis 2 Problems Used Car

Reliable, but unclaimed: the shortcomings of Kia Magentis 2 with a run
Kia Magentis - a sedan of the middle class of the South Korean automotive company Kia Motors. Since its introduction in the domestic market, most car enthusiasts have taken Kia Magentis as a business car for a middle-class official, and as a more affordable alternative to Toyota Camry and the like. The first thing that attracts this auto - a good ratio of size and value. Few manufacturers can offer "as much business class" for reasonable money. But how things are with the reliability of this model after many years of operation, and whether to consider Kia Magentis 2 for purchase in the second hands, now and try to find out.

A bit of history:Kia Magentis was presented to the public at the end of 2000 at an auto show in Paris, and the next year the serial production of the model was launched. Magentis was the first joint development of the two largest Korean corporations Hyundai and Kia. The novelty received a promising name, consisting of two English words "majestic" and "genteel", which in Russian translation sound "majestic" and "noble". In many markets (China, USA, etc.), this model is better known as Kia Optima. Magentis has a common platform with the Hyundai Sonata of the fourth generation and was offered only in the sedan's body. The car was twice subjected to restyling in 2002 and 2004, during which the main emphasis was placed on changing the interior and exterior, as well as on improving equipment. The debut of Kia Magentis 2 was held in 2005 at the international motor show in Frankfurt. In the development of this generation, the best specialists from the innovation centers of Europe, Korea and the USA took part. Like its predecessor, in the US market the novelty was still called Optima, and in the local Korean market the car was known as "Kia Lotze". The second generation of Kia Magentis appeared on the Russian market in 2007. The car was first seriously upgraded in 2008, an updated car was presented at an auto show in New York. In the course of restyling, the front and rear of the car, the interior design, and the engine power were also significantly changed. The development of the design was led by the famous German specialist Peter Schreyer, who later became the chief designer of Kia, and a little later - one of the company's three presidents. Production of the model lasted until 2011, after which its place in the market was occupied by a new model, which received the global name of Optima. This car was presented in 2010 at the auto show in New York.
Weak points of Kia Magentis 2 with a runTraditionally for Korean cars, the paintwork is soft and does not withstand mechanical damage - scratches and chips appear even from a slight contact of the car body with the branches. Corrosion resistance of the body iron at a sufficiently high level, but a couple of weak spots here, nevertheless, there is. Special attention is required by the rear drainage system - over time, "bugs" appear on it. In the early stages to remove the "redheads" it is enough to wipe the problem place with a special solution or gasoline, if you start it - you have to repaint it. Also, a rusty coating on the surface of the paint can be seen on the door (rust climbs out from under moldings and door handles). If the body to follow and timely remove "bugs" serious problems with the body will not be (complaints that the metal rotted to holes, I have not met). Does not indulge in its durability and chrome on the grille - it starts to cloud after 3-5 years of auto operation. Also, chrome-plated decorative door glass patches can begin to peel off. Over time, when driving on an uneven road, an unpleasant creaking from the windscreen cover appears. Temporarily get rid of bothersome scripting helps with silicone lubrication and car washing. To permanently eliminate the problem, the patch should be placed on a double-sided adhesive tape or sealant. A lot of critics got the locks of the rear doors, at the most inopportune moment they can stop opening. The front optics, on post-restyling specimens, are prone to fogging in wet weather and temperature changes. The protective plastic of the front optics is eventually covered with a small "mesh". The rear number rattles when the trunk lid is closed, and the frame is covered with a vibration plate and splice. For vehicles equipped with heated wipers, during the cold season, the temperature of the windshield often rises from the temperature drop. Rubbers original wipers in the frost strongly dub, so when replacing it is better to give preference to the analog.
Kia Magentis 2
PowertrainsKia Magentis 2 was equipped with gasoline engines equipped with the system CVVT - 2.0 (144, 150 hp), 2.4 (162, 175 hp), 2.7 (188, 193 hp) and diesel CRDi - 2.0 (140 and 150 hp). In most of the CIS countries, cars equipped with only 2.0 and 2.7 gasoline engines were officially sold. Gasoline 2.4 and diesel engines, as a rule, were offered for the European market. All power units are sharpened to Euro 4 standards and are sensitive to the quality of combustible materials. If, for example, petrol engines are fed with "bady" gasoline, a "Check Engine" error will pop up on the instrument panel, and the resource of the catalysts will decrease significantly (in motor 2.7 there are 3 of them). In diesel engines, the exhaust system starts to "cham" a lot, and an early replacement of the diesel particulate filter may be required. Koreans, knowing about the quality of fuel offered by our gas stations, have released a new firmware for the engine control unit, which reconfigures the engine to Euro 3 standards. This problem is relevant for cars manufactured after 2008. The CVVT system, which was equipped with all gasoline engines, is demanding quality of oil. With untimely servicing of the power unit (oil change every 8-10 thousand km), the process of casing of the valve of this system is accelerated. The presence of problems with the valve will tell the increased noise (knock) of the engine at idle. If you can notice the problem at an early stage, it will be enough to remove it, in the running cases you have to change the valve. The disadvantages of petrol engines include leakage of the pallet of the crankcase and front cover. In addition, in excessively active drivers, closer to 150000 km of run, the front seal of the crankshaft can leak. If oil leaks do not be remedied in time, this can lead to damage to the pulley of attachments with a rubber damper coupling. Due to the fact that the motor 2.0 does not have hydraulic compensators, many servicemen recommend to adjust the valve clearances once 80-100 thousand km. Sensors of the crankshaft and camshafts, as well as oxygen (two of them), can begin to mope on a run of 100-120 thousand km. At idle, the engines can "dieselate" to a certain warm-up, the official dealer does not recognize this as a malfunction, calling this engine behavior its feature. The G4KD 4B11 power unit generates "chirring" at work, thereby making the owners nervous, but there is no reason for the experience, since this is a feature of the operation of the injectors. If on the revolutions from 1000 to 1300 the vibrations appear, it's probably time to change the candles. The service life of catalysts is 120-150 thousand km, if it is not replaced in time, when it is destroyed, the particles will fall into the cylinder, because of this, scuffs are formed. There are no specific statistics on the shortcomings of diesel engines, the only thing that can be said with certainty is that in our realities, after 100,000 km of run, they will have problems with fuel equipment, diesel particulate filterwhen removing, you need to replace the computer firmware) and the EGR valve. Eliminating any of these problems will result in a tidy sum.
Kia Magentis 2

TransmissionAt Kia Magentis 2 installed one of two types of gearboxes - a 5-speed mechanics and a 4-speed automatic Tiptronic, which after restyling was changed to a 5-speed automatic transmission. Operational experience has shown that all gearboxes are reliable and with timely maintenance (replacement of oil in the manual gearbox once in 60,000 km, in the automatic transmission once in 90,000 km) do not cause unnecessary trouble. Coupling in mechanics can last up to 150,000 km. In diesel versions, once in 100-120 thousand km of mileage requires the replacement of a two-mass flywheel. Symptoms - there is a characteristic knock during clutch engagement. Switching gears MKPP on some copies is accompanied by a noisy clatter - the problem is not treated. The speed of the automatic transmission is generally not high. When shifting gears, minor jerks are felt, but serious transmission problems do not arise. The key to the longevity of automatic gearboxes is power-driving (especially "in the cold" in winter) and timely maintenance.Disadvantages of suspension Kia Magentis 2 with a runAt Kia Magentis, like most business sedans, the chassis is knocked down and has a good energy intensity. Ahead is a two-lever design such as McPherson, rear - "multi-lever", on both axles stabilizers are installed lateral stability. The suspension is sturdy, but differs by its high noise, most often the reason for the knocking in the suspension is the shock absorbers - in winter they freeze and slip out of the fastenings. Also, while driving on small irregularities and under heavy load, shock absorbers can be taped, after a slight warm-up, the knock goes away. In 2010, the detail was modernized and the problem began to occur less frequently. There is a disadvantage and more serious - over time, the loose bolts of the levers of the rear suspension turn sour, because of what to expose the corners of the wheels is no longer possible. To avoid problems, bolts must be periodically lubricated. But the resource of the original suspension elements can not but rejoice. Racks of the stabilizer are nursed 40-50 thousand km, bushes - up to 80,000 km. Silent-blocks of levers of a forward suspension bracket serve 100-150 thousand in km, approximately the same go the stupile bearings and shock-absorbers. Ball joints are nursed to 200,000 km. In the rear suspension, the ball tops of the upper wishbones pass first, it occurs on a run of 100-130 thousand km. The remaining elements run 150-200 thousand km. The steering rack is equipped with a hydraulic booster, in most cases problems with it begin after 100,000 km of run - bushings are broken (the rack is repairable). Steering ends run on an average of 100-120 thousand km, traction - up to 150,000 km. The brakes are reliable, but require periodic maintenance - it is recommended to lubricate the guides of the calipers. If you do not use the handle for a long time, the cable becomes rusty and sour, which means that you have to change it.Second generation salon Kia MagentisThe quality of the finishing materials of the Kia Magentis 2 salon is at a sufficiently high level - high-quality plastic is used (does not creak), the fabric finish of the seats is unremarkable and retains a sufficiently long market appearance. But the noise insulation frankly disappointed, especially the arches and bottoms - you can hear the noise of the wheels, especially when driving on paving stones and during the rain. The problem is solved only by installing additional noise insulation. Also, the shortcomings include insufficiently high-quality leather on the braided steering wheel and the handle of the gearbox - quickly wiped. As for electrical equipment, the ventilation flaps here require special attention - they often fail. The air conditioner has a feature to automatically turn on when selecting the windshield heating mode. There may be other problems with the electrics of the cabin, so it is better to check the operation of all equipment before buying.
Kia Magentis 2. Salon
Despite the old age, there are no serious complaints about the reliability of Kia Magentis 2 from the owners, and those minor problems that may arise in the course of operation will not require the owner to make significant investments in the elimination. To buy such a car or not - it's up to you, for my part I can only add that this model definitely deserves attention.
Pluses:
  • Spacious salon.
  • Good price / quality ratio.
  • Good quality of finishing materials and assembly.

Disadvantages:
  • The consumption of motor gasoline in volume 2.0 (12-14 liters in the city).
