Worthy alternative to "Golf": disadvantages Seat Leon 2 with a run
Seat León - a car manufactured by the Spanish automotive company "SEAT". Manufacturers Seat Leon say that the Spanish car in quality is not inferior to the cars of the company Volkswagen, but at the same time, it has a much more attractive price. However, such statements seem suspicious to the domestic buyer, this is the reason for the low demand for this model. But, as things really are with the reliability of Seat Leon 2 with a run, and whether it is worth considering it as an alternative to "golf", now and try to figure it out.

A bit of history:Over the past decade, the Spanish company was buried more than once, the government hardly kept the people's stamp afloat - they wrote off debts, subsidized, but for the time being, nothing helped. The company's affairs began to improve only after Seat became part of the VW Group - it happened in the mid-80's. Investments of the Germans were enormous, but they began to bear fruit only in the early 2000s. The first generation Leon began to release in late 1998. In fact, it was not a new model, but a five-door modification of the then popular sedan Seat Toledo 2. Like most of the models of the VAG group (Audi A4, Skoda Octavia Tour and others), Leon inherited the Volkswagen Golf 4 platform (A4 PQ34) . In addition to the platform, Seat Leon has many other common components with the fourth golf (engines, transmission, running) and positioned as a more affordable, but more sporty, version of the Golf. The first generation of Seat Leon lasted almost 8 years on the assembly line, during this time around 600,000 copies were sold worldwide. The car was collected in Spain and Belgium. The debut of the Seat Leon 2 took place in May 2005. Like its predecessor, this model inherited the Golf platform, only this time, based on the fifth generation of the popular German hatchback (A5 PQ35). Thanks to the designer Walter da Silva, the car received a bright and, at the same time, expressive appearance. The main "chips" of the car were windshield wipers located along the windshield rails and hidden doors of the rear doors, "hidden" in a small triangular glass on the rear rack. Unlike the first generation, this generation of Leon was more popular. This was confirmed by the title "Best Car of the Year", which he received two years in a row (in 2006 and 2007) in Spain, Denmark, Scotland and Greece. In early 2009, Seat Leon experienced a restyling, during which changes have undergone - bumpers, optics, mirrors and rims, as well, the front panel has been refined, new versions of trim and equipment have appeared. This generation was withdrawn from production in 2012, during this time, more than 700,000 cars were produced. The third generation Seat Leon was built in September 2012 at the Prague Motor Show, and in November of the same year official sales started. Unlike its predecessors, the novelty was built on a new platform MQB, developed by Volkswagen. In the spring of 2013 at the Geneva Motor Show was presented a three-door modification of the hatch, which was named Seat Leon SC (Sport Coupe). In the same year, Seat Leon presented a station wagon, which received the name "ST". In 2014 the debut of the charged version of the car under the name «Leon Cupra» took place. In 2016, the model was modernized, during which the design and quality of interior trim materials, as well as ergonomics, safety and functionality were significantly improved.
Weak places Seat Leon 2 with a runDespite the fact that there are no special claims to the quality of the paint and corrosion resistance, it is recommended to pay special attention to the condition of the body elements before buying. The fact is that the car has the reputation of a sporty and dynamic car, in this regard, this car was mainly bought by young racers, who often became participants in minor accidents. Of the troubles inherent in the paint coating, we can note - bloating and paint irradiation on the boot lid, most often in the lantern area. As for the electricians, then, here, special attention should be given to electric drives folding mirrors - eventually stop working. The reason is a clogged mechanism. In most cases, the problem can be solved by cleaning the mechanism. Also, common faults include the failure of the trunk lid lock end. To fix the problem, you have to change the lock (changes only in collection with a handle in the form of a company logo).

PowertrainsSeat Leon 2 has a wide range of powertrains: petrol - 1.2 TSI (105 hp), 1.4 (MPI 85, TSI 125 hp), 1.6 MPI (102 hp), 1.8 TSI (160 l) .s.), 2.0 FSI (150, 185, 200, 240 and 265 hp), 2.0 TFSI (211 hp); diesel - 1.6 TDI (90 and 105 hp), 1.9 TDI (90, 105 hp), 2.0 TDI (140 and 170 hp). All powertrains were borrowed from Volkswagen Golf 4. Typically, engines rarely bother their owners, and some of them boast good economy and excellent dynamics. The most reliable and cheap in operation have proven motors of 1.4 and 1.6 MPI family. Of the shortcomings can be noted, except that, low power and a difficult start in the cold season. Some owners complain about the increased vibration of the engine at idle. In the presence of symptoms, experts recommend refreshing the engine control unit, but, to be honest, this procedure solves the problem in single cases. On the car, with a mileage of more than 150000 km, the engine begins to slowly eat up oil. Direct injection FSI engines turn Seat Leon 2 into a good "lighter", but have a number of drawbacks. For example, there are problems with the system of changing the phases of the gas distribution, and, over time, the corrugation of the exhaust system breaks off in many instances. For cars manufactured after 2009, individual ignition coils, the metal chain of the timing chain and its tensioners are not famous for a large resource, and this type of engine suffers from the accumulation of carbon deposits on the valves. Owners of cars with TSI family motors often encounter a malfunction of the crankshaft position sensor. Also, there were problems with the reliability of the timing chain, there were times when it was stretched and jumped by 120-140 thousand km. On some specimens, the pistons burned to 150,000 kmthe problem was not of a mass character). If after a long parking in the cold season the engine works as a "diesel" (vibration, there are vibrations), the reason, most likely, in the out-of-order regulator of the phases of gas distribution (varies with the chain, tensioner and soot). Motor 1.8 is the most expensive power unit, both in maintenance and in repair, the fact is that a lot of new technologies of VW Group are used here. One of such innovations was a long chain of a new generation, the so-called toothed chain, which drives both camshafts. The short chain drives the oil pump. The TFSI family is economical, but with impressive dynamics. However, such power units have never been reliable, the most common problems are: increased oil consumption (up to 1 liter per 1000 km), a small resource of the timing chain and ignition coils, destruction of the cylinder walls. The turbine at careful operation serves 150-200 thousand km. In engines with direct injection, a large amount of carbon deposits forms quickly in the intake manifold, most often the owners of machines of the first years of production face the problem. Of the shortcomings of all power units, periodic minor electronics malfunctions can be noted.
Diesel engines, like gasoline, basically deserve only positive feedback. The main advantages of engines operating on heavy fuel are economy (consumption of 5-6 liters per hundred) and good traction. Also, it is worth noting that the first versions of the car tolerate the quality of domestic diesel oil. After 2009, all diesel engines started using Common Rail fuel system, as a result, when using poor-quality fuel, problems with injectors, injection pump and EGR valve started to appear. Of the common troubles here one can note the failure and cracking of the cylinder head. The most common problem occurs on engines with a volume of 2.0 TDI PD. If the car is constantly used in the city, then the service life of the particulate filter is significantly reduced. Of the minor shortcomings can be noted the increased noise of the motor, a small resource of engine mounts, freezing in frost bendiks - a known problem of starters, which are installed on cars belonging to the VW Group.

TransmissionSeat Leon 2 was equipped with 5 and 6-speed mechanics, automatic transmission Tiptronic, as well as a 6-step robot DSG. Problems with mechanics can begin early enough (after 100,000 km). The most common trouble is the rapid wear of the twin bearing, the symptoms - the noise is increased. On diesel versions, the replacement of a two-mass flywheel may be required to 150,000 km, the symptoms are a knock on the gear shift. Coupling, even with an aggressive driving style, nurses more than 100,000 km. The automatic transmission is reliable enough, but to 150000 km it may be necessary to replace the hydroblock, the symptoms - jerks appear during the gear shift and with sudden acceleration. The robotic transmission has made itself ill known on many models of Volkswagen and Skoda, however, the mechanics of the company's SRT Seat assure that these units do not have any characteristic problems like on other models (to 100,000 km fails mechatronics and clutch). Confirm or refute their words is not possible, because this model with the DSG box we have never enjoyed popularity.Running gear Seat Leon 2 with a runOn both axes Seat Leon 2 is used independent suspension: in front - McPherson, rear - "multi-lever". Suspension is quite stiff, especially it is felt on the car, which have 17-18-inch wheel disks, shod in low-profile "rubber". Most often in the suspension disturb the rear silent blocks of the front levers, on our roads they surrender after 50-70 thousand km, the front can hold out to 140,000 km. But the pillars of the stabilizer, as a rule, go up to 70-90 thousand km. The stabilizer bushings on the average serve 130-150 thousand km, but their replacement is not cheap, as they change in combination with the stabilizer. Shock absorbers, ball bearings and hub bearings (change in assembly with the hub) can hold out till 200,000 The rear suspension is also quite hardy and does not require special attention to 100,000 km. Here, the bushings of the stabilizer are the first to surrender, as a rule, this happens on a run of 100-120 thousand km. A little later, to 120-130 thousand km, the "gum" of the rear rocker arms is wearing out. The remaining elements of the rear suspension run up to 150-180 thousand km. Important: Before buying, be sure to check the condition of the loose bolts. The steering system is reliable, but not permanent. The first signs of wear of the steering rack (leaks and knock when driving on a rough road) appear closer to 150000 km of run, as a rule, bushings are broken. The average resource of the steering tips is 100-120 thousand km, traction runs up to 150,000 km. As for the braking system, there are no remarks to its reliability.SalonInterior cabin, like the body, decorated in a sporty style. If we talk about the quality of finishing materials, then, as a rule, there are no remarks to it. No complaints and wear resistance finish. But to the noise isolation and visibility there are insignificant claims, and if the first defect can be corrected, then, with the second one will have to face off. Electrical equipment is reliable and does not cause unnecessary trouble.
Seat Leon 2. Salon
Sports temperament Seat Leon 2 did not affect the health of second-hand copies - many cars of this model, represented on the secondary market, decent decent technical condition. Like most older VW Group models, maintenance costs are low, naturally, this applies only to the basic versions, thanks to the large selection of available non-original spare parts.
  • Good equipment.
  • Attractive design.
  • Sturdy suspension.
  • Large selection of power units.

  • Weak noise insulation.
  • Limited view when reversing.
