Toyota Highlander 2 Problems Used Car

Reliability above all: All about the disadvantages of Toyota Highlander 2 with a run
Toyota Highlander - a large 7-seat crossover, which is impressive in size, good cross-country ability, good equipment and low maintenance costs. This is what makes a car very popular in the secondary market. The last generation Highlander is quite expensive, therefore, many fans of large crossovers consider the option of buying a previous version, at which prices look very attractive. But, like most cars with mileage, Highlander has its drawbacks, we'll talk about them today.

A bit of history:
Toyota Highlander built on one platform with "Toyota Camry". The first generation Highlander was introduced in 2000, the car is also known as "Toyota Kluger". In 2007, at the auto show in Chicago, the second generation of the Toyota Highlander was introduced. Compared with the previous generation, the car became much larger, received new headlights, a radiator grille, a modern bumper with a chrome strip below and fog lights, and the ground clearance was increased to 206 mm. Toyota Highlander is sold in two versions, which differ from each other only by the number of additional equipment. At the choice of buyers were offered five- and seven-seat variants of the car, there were also mono-drive versions of the crossover. In the range of power units there are hybrid versions, but they were not officially supplied to us.
In 2010, the car survived restyling, which resulted in a significant change in the design of the front of the car. In the same year, official deliveries of the car to Ukraine and Russia began. Up to this point, the car was mainly sold in North America and Australia. Technically, the restyling Highlander is practically the same as before the restyling version. As befits the SUV, it is built on a lightweight chassis and a passenger platform, no downshifts and locks in the transmission are provided. The Highlander is equipped with a permanent full and symmetrical drive, without any frills. In the spring of 2013 at the auto show in New York, the third generation Toyota Highlander was introduced.

Toyota Highlander 2
Toyota Highlander 2 is equipped with only gasoline power units - 2.7 (187 hp), 3.5 (273 hp) and a hybrid version 3.3 (212 hp). All motors have proven themselves for reliability. If the previous owner correctly serviced and operated the machine, then there will be practically no investment in power units. When choosing a car imported from the United States, you need to be very attentive, often there these machines are almost not served. It is recommended to choose from cars that were bought and serviced by an authorized dealer, the motors of such cars usually work very long. When inspecting the Highlander imported from the states, pay attention to the condition of the oil under the filler neck, the oil should not look like a shoe polish. Many sellers are wiping traces of old oil from the neck and the lid, so you need to use a napkin or a finger to go as far as possible into the throat. Some motorists are afraid of cars with a hybrid installation, but this is unfounded, since the batteries are resource-intensive and require virtually no maintenance. Machines with a motor 2.7 may experience strong vibrations during a cold start, which are transmitted to the body. This feature is not a breakdown and after a slight warming up the vibration disappear. Motor 3.5 has a long history, for example, it is very well proven on the Toyota Camry. The reputation of the timing chain drive is positive, the chain here is durable, its resource is 250-300 thousand km. The maintenance schedule for the car is 10,000 km.
Toyota Highlander 2
Toyota Hylender with a mechanical transmission will not be met, as the car is completed only with an automatic transmission. Machines with a hybrid plant are equipped with a variator. As the operational experience has shown, the five-speed automatic does not have any drawbacks, and for its long life (250-300 thousand km) it is enough to change the oil in a box once every 60,000 km. Many buyers are afraid of the variator, in fact, you should be afraid of this box only if the car has a high mileage or if you are not sure of the seller. Oil in the variator must be changed at least every 40-60 thousand km, depending on the operating conditions. The all-wheel-drive system, like the transmission, is very reliable, but still, from the point of view of performance characteristics, there are complaints about it. So, for example, when driving at high speed, the transmission dries heavily.
The Toyota Highlander showroom is quite simple, but thanks to the quality assembly of the cricket here is a rarity. A weak spot is the stove (it stops working after 3-4 years of operation), to solve this drawback, you need to disassemble the front panel and solder all the contacts.
Toyota Halender has a completely independent suspension type McPherson. The cars officially imported into the CIS have overly rigid shock absorbers, which do not work very well on road irregularities. Cars produced for other markets do not have this problem. One of the features of Toyota Highlander is related to steering, on cars even with a small mileage when turning the rudder, you can hear extraneous sounds. The reason is the backlash of the splined connection of the intermediate steering shaft. Owners of imported cars drove with this problem for a long time (20-30 thousand km), and then sold a car with this problem; on the dealer cars, as a rule, the owners changed this node under warranty. There is an opinion that the repair of Toyota's suspension is quite expensive, so this is not exactly the case for Heilander. Unlike other cars, most of the details here are not assembled, but separately. If you do not try to make a full-fledged SUV from this car, then the suspension lives for a long time - 100-150 thousand km. The only weak point here is the stabilizer bars, their resource is 20-40 thousand km. As for the braking system, the brake discs are considered to be the weakest point, their resource is 40-60 thousand km. At each maintenance it is necessary to lubricate the support and if this is not done, they will begin to sour and podklinivat.
Toyota Highlander 2
Tyota Highlander is more intended for quiet movement on asphalt, and if you do not fundamentally off-road characteristics of the car, then the reliability and practicality will not disappoint Highlander. If, on the contrary, you are looking for Toyota for road off-roading, then it is better to take the 120 Prado in the second-hand version, the difference in value in the secondary market is not very large (2000-3000 cu).
