Toyota Rav 4 was equipped with the following power units: petrol 2.0 (152, 158 hp), 2.4 (170 hp) 3.5 (269 hp); diesel 2.2 (136, 150 and 177 hp). Engine 2.4 is more focused on the American market and does not tolerate high-octane fuel, so many mechanics recommend filling it with only 92-m gasoline. The timing drive of both machines is chain, the lifetime of the chain and tensioner is about 200,000 km. The drive belt of attachments requires a replacement of 100,000 km once. After 150000 km of run, gasoline engines begin to eat up oil, this problem is solved only by replacing the piston rings. If the engine starts to lose power or works unevenly at idle, try cleaning the fuel injectors, most likely this will solve the problem. On a run of 150,000 km, the pump starts leaking, and if this is not followed, the probability of engine overheating is high. Also, in order not to overheat the engine, the radiator should be flushed at least once a year. In other respects the engines are reliable enough and with proper maintenance they will serve 300-350 thousand km without problems. Until 2010, the Toyota Rav 4 was equipped with a five-speed mechanics and a four-speed automatic. Later, the manufacturer replaced the automatic transmission with a variator, and instead of the five-speed mechanics, a new six-speed manual transmission was introduced. Many fans of Rav 4 equipped with automatic transmission were very disappointed by such a replacement, since the machine did not deliver any problems to its owners for 300,000 km. The variator can not be called unreliable, but nevertheless, it is not as long as the automatic transmission, the resource of the variator does not exceed 200,000 km. To extend the lines of the automatic transmission service, many owners recommend changing the oil in it at least once every 60,000 km, not timely oil change significantly reduces the life of the box. Therefore, before buying a used car with automatic transmission, make sure of the timely replacement of the oil by the former owner, otherwise, later, you can face serious problems. First of all, there are shocks when switching from the first to the second, then you need to replace the hydraulic compensators.

All-wheel drive in all Toyota Rav 4, as well as on most of the SUVs, is connected by means of an electromagnetic clutch. On the hard surface, only the front drive of the car is used, but with the slightest slip, the system automatically connects the rear drive. All-wheel-drive vehicles require oil change in the rear differential (at least once in 40,000 km, neglect of these requirements leads to the failure of the rear axle, the replacement of the clutch will cost $ 2,000). If the previous owner rarely changed the oil, then when the rear drive is connected, the differential will be buzzing. Despite its age, the third generation Toyota Rav 4 visually looks good and compares favorably with its competitors, but the quality of the materials is not any better than the others, and in some places even worse. Also, the owners of the car and noise insulation are not pleased. The electrical equipment equipped with Rav 4 is very reliable, the only thing that causes a complaint is the rear brake light switch, which is located under the brake pedal, it often burns out.

Fortunately, this site is repairable, the manufacturer knows about this problem and therefore issued a special repair kit (repair is enough for 15-20 thousand km). But the steering rods and tips are hardy enough and can serve more than 100,000 km. The Toyot Rav 4 of the third generation does not have any outstanding characteristics, but, in terms of reliability, this is a very successful car. If you are a quiet driver and you need a car for daily trips to work, dacha, fishing or picnic, then Rav 4 will be the right choice. But, if you expect any emotion and drive from the car, then this car will greatly disappoint you.
